Title: No Matter What

Author : Sandy Howarth

Publisher: Chipmunkapublishing

ISBN: 97818474477491

Steven is now 15 years of age. Having done my utmost to support Steven with his educational needs, I have recognized that the only progress he made was during the time he was taught at home by myself. It was intensive but extremely rewarding. However, allowing him to be placed in an environment, without adequate support, has meant that there has been no progress made. I have retained the teaching material from 7 years ago, when I last taught Steven at home, with the hope of gaining the energy to continue that level of commitment towards teaching him again. I find that Steven's time is wasted, in addition to the LEA's resources being wasted, in offering provision which doesn’t meet Steven's needs.

Living with Autism is a challenge to most families, but living in our world is a greater challenge to an individual with Autism. Help them in their journey through life.

Title: I Want to be Like You  Life With Asperger's Syndrome

Author: Travis E. Breeding

Publisher: Tate Publishing

ISBN: 978-1-61663-918-1

Travis Breeding has never been like others. Growing up, he noticed some of the differences-he had a bed-wetting issue; he had difficulty with fine motor skills; he became obsessed with his special interest, trombone; and most troubling for him, he had trouble making friends. He just couldn't seem to fit in with anyone and didn't understand how socializing worked. He couldn't understand why people didn't like him. Why didn't everyone think he was so weird or creepy or psycho? Was he?

Travis hit a low point in his college days and began making suicide attempts. When he finally learned he has Asperger's, it wasn't quite the solution he longed for. He didn't want to accept it. But once he embraced it, he realized he could begin making changes that could someday lead to living the life he wants-one that includes a family and good friends. And even more, he could help others just like him.

Now Travis is on a mission to help us all understand what Asperger's is and how we can help those around us who seem a little, or a lot, different. With a combination or personal experiences, information about Asperger's and the autism spectrum, and Travis's observation and advise, I Want to be Like You proves to be a perfect tool to help readers who are on the spectrum, are helping someone, or just want to understand what this relatively new diagnosis is to bridge the gap between autistic and neurotypical individuals.

Title: The Best kind of Different: Our family's Journey with Asperger's Syndrome

Author: Shonda & Curt Schilling

Publisher: Harper Collins

ISBN: 978-0-06-198683-3

Until the summer of 2007, the word Asperger's was not part of Shonda Schilling's vocabulary, but that summer changed everything. By then, her household was in chaos as her son Grant spiraled out of control. His acting out and refusal to listen had grown to epic proportions, but even worse was his apparent inability to relate to the people around him. None of the Schilling's other three kids ever acted like Grant; his behavior wasn't unruly, it was irrational.

Complicating matters was the fact that Shonda's husband, Curt, was constantly on then road pitching for the Boston Red Sox, so he wasn't always around to see Grant's behavior firsthand. Seemingly everyone Shonda encountered had an opinion-"he’s too spoiled," "he needs a good spanking," "he needs more discipline"-but it was a disastrous first attempt at summer camp that told Shonda something was definitely wrong. It was then that a neurologist diagnosed Grant with Asperger's syndrome-a form of high-functioning autism that, in recent years , has been found in children who at first glance appear to be disruptive and difficult.

Now in The Best Kind of Different, Shonda details every step of her family's journey with Asperger's, offering a parent's perspective on this complicated and increasingly common condition. Looking back on Grant's early years, she describes the signals she missed in his behavior and confronts the guilt that engulfed her after she came to understand just how misguided her parenting had been before the diagnosis. In addition, she talks about the harsh judgment she’s faced from people who don't buy into the diagnosis and how she's used passion and information to fight the ignorance of others.

Celebrating Grant's success and learning from his setbacks, Shonda demonstrates how Asperger's forced her and her husband to reconsider everything they thought they knew about their son and each other, but in the end, it has made their marriage and their family stronger and happier. A tribute to Grant's strength and a candid glimpse into a family coming to terms with its differences, The Best Kind of Different is an intimate portrait of two parents struggling to understand the complex beauty of their son.

Title: TPM Reloaded

Author: Joel Levitt

Publisher: Industrial Press

ISBN: 978-0-8311-3426-6

When practiced appropriately, Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) can tilt the playing field in your company’s favor.  It makes similar machines turn out significantly more product with less scrap or waste more efficiently.  The work force is more motivated, more engaged, more flexible and more aggressive in seeking improvements.  TPM adds the worker’s creativity to the equation.  TPM recognizes that the employee is the secret weapon.  TPM helps unleash their talent, attention and team spirit.  You will also see that TPM is a production/operations effort as much as Lean Manufacturing, Total Quality, or any other company-wide production program.

TPM Reloaded is a challenging, innovative and timely new look at implementing TPM by one of the field’s leading trainers and authors.  It takes into account the economic upheavals of recent years and demonstrates that TPM is less about moving maintenance tasks to operations than moving accountability for aggregate output of the plant to operators.  The book goes on to show that effective TPM – TPM reloaded – requires a radical change in management’s view of the worker and even more daunting, a radical change in the way workers view their own role.

Joel Levitt wrote this book for managers and supervisors of all types of operations and production, from traditional manufacturing and assembly to mining, refining, smelting, chemical production, as well as for service industries such as trucking and facility maintenance.  The concepts of TPM can be applied to any productive effort, as varied as a bus driver or a control room operator aboard a ship or in a refinery.  Regardless of where you work, this book can be an invaluable guide for implementing TPM and helping your company achieve greater success.

Joel Levitt is a leading maintenance trainer throughout the USA, Canada, Europe and Asia and is a best-selling author.

Title: Turtle: David Bushnell’s Revolutionary Vessel

Author(s): Roy R. Manstan and Frederic J. Frese

Publisher: Westholme Publishing

ISBN: 978-1-59416-105-6

At the onset of the American Revolution, the British expected to quell the rebellion quickly with a show of overwhelming force.  In an experiment in asymmetric warefare, David Bushnell created the first submarine vessel designed specifcally ‘for the destruction of vessels of war.’  On a quiet September night in 1776, sergeant Ezra Lee maneuvered Bushnell’s strange little craft out from Manhattan and into the midst of the greatest naval fleet ever assembled in the Americas.  Lee’s goal was to sink the British flagship HMS Eagle by attaching a powerful explosive to its hull.  Although the mission was unsuccessful, Bushnell’s concept of submarine warfare was considered by George Washington to have been ‘an effort of genius.’

David Bushnell was raised in the town of Saybrook at the mouth of the Connecticut River.  More than two centuries later, another Turtle would be launched into the same river within sight of Bushnell’s first forays with his vessel during the summer of 1775.  Under the direction of technical arts teacher Frederic J. Frese, students at Old Saybrook High School created a working replica of Bushnell’s submarine, facilitated through an education partnership with the Naval Undersea Warfare Center in Newport, Rhode Island, where Roy R. Manstan was a mechanical engineer and Navy trained diver.  With twenty-first century submariners at the helm, the Turtle replica was subjected to a series of operational tests at the Mystic Seaport Museum in Mystic, Connecticut.

In Turtle: David Bushnell’s Revolutionary Vessel, the authors provide new insight into Bushnell’s ‘engine of devastation,’ tracing the history of undersea warfare before Bushnell and the origin of many innovations Bushnell understood would be necessary for conducting a covert submarine attack.  The knowledge gained from testing the Turtle replica enabled the authors to speculate as to what America’s first submariner Ezra Lee experienced that September night and what may have caused the attack to fail.

Roy R Manstan is a mechanical engineer and former Command Diving Officer of the NUWC.  He has degrees from Lafayette College, the University of Connecticut, and Connecticut College.

Frederic J. Frese is a technical arts teacher at Old Saybrook High School.  He received his teaching degree from Central Connecticut State University.
